The Chinese president scolded Justin Trudeau and hinted that he had leaked the contents of their meeting to the media.
Chinese President Xi Jinping has publicly criticized Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for leaking the contents of their meeting to the media. Canadian reporters captured the exchange on video Wednesday during the G20 summit in Bali, Indonesia.
For barely a minute, the exchange begins with Xi, who speaks through a translator and tells Trudeau “Everything we discussed was leaked to the newspapers.”
“That is not how it should be. And that’s not how the conversation went. Xi added. “If there was sincerity on your part…”
“In Canada, we believe in free, open and candid dialogue, and we will continue to do so,” Trudeau replied, talking about the translator still trying to convey Xi’s words.
“We will continue to try to work together constructively, but there will be things we disagree on.” added the Canadian leader.
“We are going to create the conditions [for that] first,” Xi replied and offered Trudeau a handshake. While the Chinese leader smiled and walked on, the Canadian Prime Minister walked away from the camera alone.

What Reuters described as “a rare expression of public outcry” by Xi follows media reports about the content of his meeting with Trudeau Tuesday.
Over the course of the ten-minute meeting, Trudeau increased “serious concerns” about China “interference activities” in Canada ranging from industrial espionage to interference in the 2019 federal election, a “government source” he told AFP.
According to the same source, they also discussed the situation in Ukraine, North Korea and the upcoming biodiversity conference in December, which Beijing and Ottawa are co-hosting.
