The Canadian government has announced that they are banning all use of Huawei’s 4G and 5G technology and any other ZTE product in telecommunications services across the country for fear that they will give information about their citizens to the Chinese government.
Huawei’s expansion around the world is getting more and more complicated, Canada joins the rest of the countries that are part of the so-called Five Eyes Intelligence Networkwhere we can find the United States, United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand, to Ban Huawei technology and services on its territory.
The decision to ban Huawei has been discussed for more than three years, but according to Innovation Minister François-Philippe Champagne, “this has never been a race. It’s about making the right decision.”
During an intervention, the minister announced the country’s future plans regarding these two Chinese companies. An important aspect is that there are already companies that use the equipment and services of Huawei and ZTE, because this Champagne has said that they will have to leave the technology 5G by June 2024 and 4G technology by the end of 2027.
“As a result, telecommunications companies operating in Canada would no longer be authorized to use the designated equipment or services provided by Huawei and ZTE. Similarly, companies that operate this equipment already installed in their networks should stop with its use and withdraw it.” explained the minister.
However, this is not so easy, as Huawei has been selling around since 2018 $700 million in business equipment active in Canada, mainly Bell and Telus, according to the toronto sun. It is added that the government is not responsible and does not intend to financially reimburse the costs of these companies that have invested in equipment of these companies.
“Our government will always protect the security of Canadians and take all necessary steps to protect our critical telecommunications infrastructure,” he added. The veto against Huawei continues to occur in the world, and while it is currently only in the telecommunications sector, it should come as no surprise that the Canadian government bans any product from Huawei and ZTE for the foreseeable future.
