NASA presented a first look at what will be the space suit that will be worn by the astronauts who will step on the moon in 2025.
This Wednesday morning at a press conference from the Houston Space Center in Texas, NASA presented the spacesuit for use by astronauts who will travel to the moon on the Artemis II and Artemis III missions of the Artemis programaiming for a new moon landing.
The space agency selected the company Axiom Space for the design of the suits and what the spacewalk will be in the future, forecast for the year 2025after the test flight of Artemis II, which dates back to 2024.
This first prototype, provisionally in black, was named “AxEMU” and “has the range of motion and flexibility needed to further explore the lunar landscape,” he says. the notification published by NASA.
They also explain that “although this prototype uses a dark gray upholstery material, the final version will likely be all-white when worn by NASA astronauts on the surface of the moon, to keep astronauts safe and cool while they work in the harsh environment of space.”
Who will wear the Artemis program space suit?
That must be remembered the astronauts who will crew the Orion rocket of the Artemis II mission next year will be 4including 3 Americans, a Canadian and the first woman to reach the moon.
However, they won’t be officially announced until April 3that NASA will confirm their names in conjunction with the Canadian Space Agency (CSA).
Furthermore, it is important to point out for Artemis II there will be no moon landing as suchInitially, the crew will travel to lunar orbit and stay there for a few weeks to verify that the ship’s systems and conditions are suitable for humans.
Subsequently, and after evaluating the results of this mission, astronauts will finally hit the ground near the south pole of the moon in 2025according to NASA plans, completing a moon landing more than 50 years after the last Apollo mission.
