CANADA.- After the presentation of several energy and mining projects by the Mexican government, the Canadian government expressed concern about Mexico’s approach to the regulations and approvals for biotechnology.
maria ngCanada’s Minister of International Trade, Export Promotion, Small Business and Economic Development expressed this disagreement during a virtual meeting with Raquel BuenrostroMexico’s economy minister.
Via a tweet, Buenrostro stated that “they held a meeting where they agreed to clear the working tables regarding the energy issue and stressed the importance of making progress in the trade issues that benefit both countries“.

Biotechnology in contrast to global food security
While the Canadian official explained in a statement that “there are concerns about the consultations that Canada has initiated among the Treaty between Mexico, the United States and Canada (T-MEC) regarding certain regulatory reforms of the energy sector”.
So said the Canadian minister the regulation of biotechnology productsparticularly in a context of concerns about global food security and the importance of science-based regulatory processes.
Minister Ng reiterated Canada’s continued concerns about Mexico’s investment climate, particularly in the energy and mining sectors, the statement said.
This meeting took place the day after Buenrostro met with the United States Trade Representative, Katherine Taiwhere the US official spoke of the “importance of acting quickly to prevent the problems in the energy sector of Mexico identified by the United States in its July 20, 2022 request for consultations under the T-MEC”.
