The Guatemalan delegationunder the leadership of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mario Búcaro, his participation in the fifty-second regular parliamentary term of the General Assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS)in Lima, Peru, where “he reiterated his stance on sensitive issues such as sexual diversity and the protection of life,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (minex).
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized the country’s commitment to the fight against corruption, impunity and strengthening security and justice. In addition, he recalled the importance of an OAS election observation mission, in the General elections of 2023.
In addition to the above, the national representatives stressed the importance of creating and preserving space for mutual understanding and communication between states, civil society and other social actors.
24 states signed a declaration in favor of Ukraine.
Support for Ukraine
During the plenary session, the Foreign Minister issued a statement expressing his support for ending the Russian aggression in Ukrainefor and on behalf of 24 states.
In this regard, Guatemala, together with Antigua and Barbuda, with the guidance of Canada and the United States, has led the discussions to present this statement, in which its “concern at Russia’s indifference and contempt for the OAS’s admonitions”, and demand “fulfilling its international human rights and humanitarian obligations”.
He also expressed his appreciation for the permanent representative of the interim government of President Juan Guaidó, of Venezuela, to the OAS, as he has since 2019 overturned the denunciation of the OAS charter propagated by the Nicolás Maduro regime in 2017 did.
